For our work on ICB (Indian Craft Brewery). Proving that authentic Indian heritage can be a global heavyweight. Spread’s award-winning design for ICB sidesteps imitation by diving deep into India’s own brewing history, which dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The entire brand identity is a nod to these roots, featuring a custom typeface derived from ancient Indic seals and unique Beeroglyphs that narrate ancient tales without a single word. The result is a brand that is both primal and futuristic, transforming the brewery into a sanctuary of positive hedonism. This philosophy extends to its operations, where sustainability is key, and brewing byproducts are repurposed.  Having already welcomed over 500,000 guests within nine months of its launch, ICB has successfully brought a taste of ancient India to the modern craft beer scene, demonstrating that the most refreshing ideas can be steeped in Indian history. “Indian culture is the richest open source for native ideas to feed the new and innovative. To turn ordinary everyday experience into extraordinary.  Spread Design and Innovation worked closely with the Founders of the Indian Craft Brewery to develop an original Indian brewery concept by going deep into our Indic roots. Craft is the new luxury The Indian Craft Brewery project is the crafting of a new story, a new drinking culture – crafting every design detail of food, drink and place to allow patrons to immerse in a whole new experience. True to us as – craft is the new luxury.   This meant, exploring the trading seals of the Indus Valley Civilization, studying the scripts, taking inspiration from the richness and elemental qualities of the seals. In this rich civilisation, there are traces of beer brewing equipment. Every part of our great country has indigenous spirits – entirely original, native and innovative, a great source of rich inspiration. Familiar, yet surprising! Besides discovering unbroken traditions in our culture. Research into the Indus Valley’s brewing and trading traditions led to the discovery that beer was brewed in the Indus Valley in 1300 BC and we discovered Vari – a symbol from Indic seals representing an unbroken pilgrimage tradition where young men carry water for miles. The tradition and the water carrier is unbroken  – to this day. Thus we developed the idea of the Vari, the water carrier representing one who quenches our thirst for adventure, also each one of us and ICB patrons. ICB is more than a brewery; it is a cultural movement that transforms longing into belonging by reconnecting individuals with their roots and offering a sanctuary for meaningful connections. Spread’s approach involved creating a deeply evocative imagination property that blended Indic heritage with cutting-edge experiential design. From crafting a logo inspired by ancient Indic seals to designing sacred, sensory-rich spaces, every element of ICB resonates with authenticity and cultural pride. The Challenge With over 70 breweries in Bengaluru, the beer capital of India, the landscape is saturated with global influences but so far lacks a brewery that truly resonates with Indian roots. The founding team of ICB aimed to disrupt this space by introducing a culturally rich, deeply evocative craft brewery experience. Spread’s role was to conceptualize and create an imagination property that encapsulates this bold ambition. This required not just a rethinking of the brewery’s offering but also a complete reimagining of how culture, design, and gastronomy could coalesce to deliver an unparalleled experience. VARI The water carrier, quenching our thirst/s and easing our quests. Our story starts from precious crafted designer seals found in Indic Times. They were markers of wealth. The truest wealth is happiness. So we took the idea of our physical and spiritual journeys – Transcending boundaries, overcoming everyday challenges to find happiness out there and within. We are all Journeymen and women. The Vari is thus both the thirsty and the thirst quencher. Both you and your companion. ICB turns the Longing of the spirit into Belonging! Given the importance of water in our lives, we felt that the symbol should represent our journey and ICB be the people who satisfy our thirst, a soulful thirst for culture, for experiences, for taste, for experience that is heightened and extremely personal and sensitive. Real luxury is when we find our primal, native, true selves. To revitalise our drinking, eating, gathering, communing, celebrating culture, going back within to a space that is authentic, that knows us and that we know yet is bold and new. Spread engagement At Spread, we engage with ideas that challenge the status quo. We care deeply about culture and have a fierce pride in our civilization and in our roots. We are committed to elevating the human experience. In our geography with our deep stories. That the founding team of ICB was attempting something audacious at a deep and serious scale told us that we had the opportunity to create what we call an imagination Property. Madness was the one word the Founders used to describe their ambition, but I don’t think it is madness. It is the right idea at the right time with over 70 breweries in Bangalore, which is the beer capital of the country – it is surprising that in our minds we are so colonised that we don’t yet have a brewery with Indian roots. Actually, we have a culture of craft. Together we journeyed to the heart of the Indic civilization to find stories we could tell in the space and the experience, through the taste buds, through evocative ideas So this is our story, our roots, our experience revisited, we say it’s innonative, not just innovative. Beer has been brewed in India since at least 1500 BC, as attested by Vedic literature. The earliest beers were made from rice or millet. Beer symbolises friendship, loyalty and community and opens up possibilities. Beeroglyphs A series of illustrations with custom typography tell tales of long forgotten stories and shape the brand experience. Be it with beautiful names for spaces within the brewery or beer nomenclature. Distinctly ICB, the design language marks your entire experience with Beeroglyphs. You must ask for your own beeroglyph digital stickers as they do exist. No other Brewery brand must have so much design thinking or brand thought. That’s a challenge! A sacred space Brewing Community, Fermenting friendship, Crafting happiness. Crafted with an elemental palette. Bold custom Indic typography with beer codes. Pops of Indian colour…brand as a system that shows up in everything from the materials and flowers in the space to the food. For a chiseled and rich crafted and timeless feel, based on the seals, we created a custom font that we call ‘Varg’, Sanskrit for square. The type in the entire language comes from the Indic seals that were used to keep accounts of wealth. So the ICB logo is the mark of a clan leader, a new happiness that is a new wealth. It’s a new age typographic mark. The typography follows beer codes. But is an original crafted typeface. An aside, this was in fact Spread’s second innings with BTS, with its first avatar, named BengaluruITE.biz, being conceived and designed by the team in 2017. The theme #Unbound Spread has partnered with Govt. of Karnataka and MMActiv to conceive, design and launch a call and a movement for tech in Karnataka to be Unbound. Creating the communication, media assets and a vibrant experience for the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024 Spread’s journey began with a singular insight, “breaking boundaries in tech and innovation, Karnataka is ready. To be unbound!” The State of Karnataka, India, has invested significantly in knowledge and talent. To evolve beyond Industry 4.0. Unite humanity and tech. Set technology free with human thought. To innovate and generate infinite possibilities. Result, 46 unicorns, India’s largest AI Talent Pool, 460+ GCCs, 150+ Incubators and accelerators. The world’s 4th largest Tech cluster. Where else but in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India where the State Government, institutions, investors and the people have come together in a unique PPPP (People Public Private Partnership), to create the world’s largest ecosystem for innovation at scale. We created a gallery of larger than life characters that diffuse, suffuse and infuse the experience with a look and visual vocabulary that makes BTS 2024 feel Unbound. Designing a tech show which is about possibilities for people, planet, profit unbound, presented artistically. Bringing it to life as installations, dynamic digital assets, giveaways, Tshirts and cool, youthful event merchandise. The Experience Immersive, Larger than Life The grand arch welcomes you as soon as you arrive at BTS 2024, with lights playing in a harmony of colors. Next, you come to the Pavilion, where installations of the BTS characters greet you, offering many a photoworthy moment. Giant trees become hotspots to exchange ideas and possibilities. The Dream Tree calls you, to tag your dreams and absorb the dreams of others. Then you walk through the portal to find yourself in a world of innovation and tech, entering the Bangalore Palace, where technicorns, innovators, investors and leaders from the world of tech run unbound. The experience at BTS 2024 immerses you, nudging you to answer the call within, to be unbound! The Gifts Craft Unbound BTS 2024 is truly the convergence of Art and Tech. Where skilled human hands and indigenous knowledge of generations found the global platform. Collaborating with the women of Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra, Spread designed and developed a unique Angavastram as Karnataka’s gift to distinguished guests, delegates and dignitaries from across geographies. Prarthana School was established in 2002, by Shri Ravi Belagere, an independent thinker, provocative journalist, maverick showman and visionary educationist – a man who had a dream – to make inclusion and equal opportunity the pillars of a unique education system, that breaks the mould of elitist quality education.The Brand Refresh project was catalysed by the next gen leadership seeking a Design mind and partner for a new journey. For which, conventional creative agencies are/were not enough. That was when Ms Lakshmi reached out to Spread online. The chemistry was instant, and a few meetings later, we were together immersing in the Brand Refresh for Prarthana.A sidebar : When Mr Karna and Ms Lakshmi asked our founders where they would want to start the project from, they mentioned that naturally, we would begin from the Founder. That we would like deep conversations and an understanding of his real intent. After this conversation, there was a period of silence. Unfortunately, the founder departed for his heavenly journey. And what was an exploration became a mission and a responsibility owned by the next generation. The Challenge Over two decades, the Prarthana dream has grown organically, with 7 campuses, over 7500 students and a 100% success rate in SSLC exams.But, as the locality (of Padmanabhanagar, South Bangalore) evolved, the milieu has changed. Making image and infrastructure the key drivers of choice for an aspirational middle class audience.Presenting the need for Prarthana to evolve, and emerge as a resilient next gen brand for next gen learners – one that represents the idea and values of the Founder, taken forward by the next gen leadership. Design Research The Spread Strategy team did a month long qualitative as well as quantitative design research with 200+ educators, 10+ parents, 40+ students and alumni deploying proprietary tools. Immersing deep to emerge with human centred insights about the past, present and future of Prarthana and its perception in the milieu. Defining the Brand Personality – if the Brand Prarthana were a person, how old would she be, what would she wear, how would she speak. Using methods of appreciative enquiry to understand the Big Dream that all stakeholders (students, parents, educators, principals, leadership and alumni) have for Prarthana. Insight All of these synthesised to arrive at the key insight that Prarthana builds inner strength, through positive affirmation.Talent exists. But talent alone is not enough. Positive affirmations create a Scaffolding effect, helping children combat the pesky ANTs (automatic negative thoughts). Giving them the confidence to catalyse their inner strength, so that they can find their own identity. (Like a Prayer, that fills you up with positive energy. No, at Prarthana your child doesn’t feel stifled in School). Solution Prarthana is a school where classlessness and fearlessness come together, to create a cultural springboard. Despite all of this, the absence of direct connectivity to the State presents a bottleneck.Result, the growth and economic potential of Goa, which has the highest per capita GDP in India, was getting constrained.Presenting the need for a 24 / 7 connected airport that will help unlock the tremendous potential of Goa and her people. A green field project being developed in Mopa, North Goa on a public private partnership model between the Govt. of Goa, Govt. of India and the GMR Group. With a platinum level pre certification for green infrastructure, unwavering commitment to carbon neutrality, renewable energy initiatives, the New Goa International Airport will set new benchmarks in sustainability. 25% of the power consumption at the Airport will harness the power of the sun.Besides, significant efforts are underway to replenish and grow the green cover in and around the airport.World class facilities will ensure seamless operations and a hassle free, joyful passenger experience, every time.The foundation stone for the airport was laid by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in 2016, It is now being inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2022. The Solution Destination Branding is coming of age. Where a place creates a unique feeling. Through a careful design of the overall brand and experience, physical and digital to evoke a special feeling. The place is no longer just a modern, fresh and functional space but a living, breathing construct and Brand in the heart and mind of the experiencer who immerses in it and is touched in unforgettable ways.At the New Goa Airport, the attempt is to make every traveller ‘feel Goa’ even before (or after) they experience many new facets of Goa physically. It is India’s first Destination Airport.The intention is to have high operational standards, sensory experience, and personal interactions. To be a space that is hygienic and helpful, has a happiness quotient and many new hurrah moments. The human experience arc is being thus designed. Designing a Destination Airport Brand and Experience Brand Strategy A detailed, multi-phase, research-based approach to collect information and develop insights about the airport consumer, other stakeholders, and the destination of Goa has been deployed to design the brand strategy for the New Goa Airport.Our work involved understanding business’ internal vision and objectives with clarity on assets, portfolio, service offerings, features Internal Scan Understanding the perspective of other stakeholders. Developing the Strategic Brand Identity: The Vertebrand Arrow™ and the Vintellity Workshop to distil the brand essence.A significant challenge is that for the Name of the Airport : The Government of Goa has reserved the right to name the airport and may do so close to the airport’s COD. Hence, a standby name will have to be used for completing the branding exercise. People Pulse Understanding the Airport Consumer: Mapping the emotional mind space, needs, expectations, preferences, consumer perceptions. Spread Strategy folks conducted 23 personal in-depth interviews across a cross-section of people, both from Goa and those who travel there. Conducted 8 free-wheeling appreciative enquiry groups (over 45 people in all) for the same. The aim was to decode wishes and aspirations of all possible travellers and businesses, plus to uncover Goa: its culture, its past, present and future, and its elusive spirit. Brand Pulse A creative and immersive exercise among members of the new airport team to explore their Travel Experiences and Inspirations, and their Expectations and Dreams for the new airport. Creative engagement and responses from 48 people of the GMR GOA Airport team and another 40 or so of the GMR Team Social Listening Over 13,000 conversations across social media, feedback portals, complaint forums etc. were analysed using AI/ML based NLP techniques to map the key dimensions of airport experience, both in India and abroad. We identified the key category drivers, the areas of concern and delight, and how individual airports perform on them. Destination Brand Strategy A new approach to airports’ development is emerging. Where airports are seen as not just vital infrastructure but destinations in and of themselves. Where passengers get a sense of place, enjoy their time and mark the airport and surrounds as a place of significance in and of itself.Goa is a unique and special national and international destination, the airport is being designed as a modern, light space with new and stylish hues, with art and design in its surrounds. A 2000+ acre airport city is also being developed, to give new opportunity and growth to a hitherto ignored region of Goa.Hence, a place or destination strategy was seen as the way forward.
